In internet terms, an affiliate is simply anyone who promotes the sales of someone else's products or services and in return receives an agreed commission for any sales resulting from their referrals. When you join an affiliate program, they give you an affiliate URL (link to the merchants website) that contains your unique affiliate identification code. Whenever someone clicks on your affiliate URL, they are taken to the merchants website and a record is made that they were referred by you. This is usually done by means of a tracking "cookie" which is a small file that sits on the visitor's PC. Whenever a visitor / customer makes a purchase, the affiliate program checks the cookie and knows that you must get paid commission because you were the original referrer.
