Alternative Eczema Treatments

Author: Kim Standerline

While there are several traditional treatments that have been considered to be relatively effective in treating eczema, there are other natural remedies available as well. While topical creams such as hydrocortisone are the most common eczema treatments those that practice alternative health remedies have also had success in treating eczema with zinc oxide and other natural concoctions.

The use of harsh soaps and laundry detergents can often irritate the skin of those that suffer from eczema. When the condition starts to flare, many have had success in suppressing the outbreak by changing their diet. By avoiding foods that can cause a sensitivity such as wheat, shellfish or peanuts, patients have been able to reduce the severity of the outbreak as well as the length of time that the eczema is present.

Many naturalists have also had success with flaxseed oil. Flaxseed oil seems to be effective in reducing inflammation. The recommended dosage of flaxseed oil is one tablespoon a day. Evening primrose oil has also been found to be effective in reducing the discomfort associated with an eczema breakout. The typical dosage for primrose oil is approximately 2 grams pre day, it should be taken with food. While it can take some time for primrose oil to be effective in treating eczema, it is the predominant treatment used in European countries.

If you are comfortable using herbs, yellow dock is a cleansing herb that is effective in cleaning the skin and lymph nodes. It helps to clear the skin of rashes, and is highly effective in treating eczema as well as other common skin disorders such as psoriasis. Other herbs that have been successfully used to treat skin disorders include burdock, nettle, red clover and cleavers. These herbs can be used to make a tea that can be consumed on a daily basis. It is recommended that you consult an herbalist in order to find what would work best for you and your particular condition.

For immediate relief from the itching and discomfort associated with eczema, zinc oxide can be applied topically. The zinc will work to calm the inflamed skin immediately and help with long term healing as well. If zinc oxide is used on inflamed or broken skin, it can cause a slight burning discomfort. Evening primrose oil can also be used directly on the skin and is actually more effective than zinc oxide on skin that is cracked or broken. Evening primrose oil will not cause burning on cracked or broken skin.

For long term care and general skin maintenance, a well rounded mulit-vitamin is suggested. Doctors believe that eczema and other skin disorders are often associated with a vitamin deficiency. A good multi-vitamin that contains an ample amount of B-12 should be taken on a daily basis.

The most important thing is to be proactive when dealing with eczema or other skin disorders. By taking proper care of your body on a regular basis, you can help to reduce the number of occurrences as well as the duration of your eczema breakouts.
