Outdoor Gazebo - Enhancing Your Life

Author: Dion Semeniuk

Building on a screened in porch or adding a high quality awning to a deck or patio can be extremely expensive. Obviously, in addition to something that will provide protection from rain, the sun, snow, and even bugs should be functional but you also want the porch or awning to enhance the appearance of your home.

Unfortunately, cost usually means dreaming. However, another excellent option that will provide functionality and a visually pleasing appearance is the outdoor gazebo.

The best thing about an outdoor gazebo is that whether choosing something permanent or temporary, prices are within most budgets. Just remember that choosing an outdoor gazebo is an important decision. Therefore, prior to ordering, you want to go through a few steps to ensure you get exactly what you need. Many times, people will go all out, building a massive outdoor gazebo, only to have it sit empty the majority of the time. Therefore, you first need to consider the various reasons you would use the gazebo, which will help you with design, style, and size.

Second to the size of outdoor gazebo, you need to measure your property so you can choose a size that will meet your needs without overpowering your yard. One thing to remember is that while the size of your yard will be a determining factor for size, so is the uses of the gazebo. In other words, if you plan building a spa gazebo where family and friends can visit often, then losing part of your grass may not be a big deal. However, if the outdoor gazebo will be used only on special occasions, you might not be willing to give up a large portion of your yard.

Another consideration for your outdoor gazebo is the appearance.

Typically, you want to choose a style that will complement your home. In fact, if you assemble a permanent gazebo, if you were ever to sell your home, chances are you will secure a higher asking price, meaning the gazebo adds value. Keep in mind that when it comes to appearance, different people want different things. In this case, it might be that you want the outdoor gazebo to be the showcase of your backyard. On the other hand, you may want a gazebo that appears to blend in with the landscape, tucked away for privacy.

Then, it is important that as you identify various locations for your new gazebo, especially if you are choosing a permanent structure, that you consider all the seasons. For instance, while your outdoor gazebo may look beautiful underneath large oak or maple trees, come fall time, you will have an abundance of leaves to clean up. Additionally, while you might love a location on high ground, remember that any high winds could come through and cause serious damage. Therefore, try your best to choose a spot on your property where the gazebo could be enjoyed to the fullest any time of year.

To make sure the spot chosen will actually work, we recommend you place some stakes at the corners of where the outdoor gazebo would sit. With that, you can look at the extending area to see if any trees or brush would need to be removed, new dirty brought in to level the ground off, and so on. Having this visual may confirm the location or prompt you to change it. Even when you believe that the ideal location has been found, it is imperative that you check out zoning requirements. Although zoning is different from city to city, typically, an outdoor gazebo of 100 square feet or less would not need a permit but you do want to check.
